Training Partnership Survey

The Purpose

The Workforce Training Partnership for the Tooling and Manufacturing Industry Initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Development Consortium, Inc., the UB Business Alliance - TCIE, WNY Technology Development Center and local NTMA employers.

The purpose of the initiative is to develop a process and implement a curriculum that links regional training providers with the tool and machine industry in order to provide a skilled workforce for the Greater Niagara Region.

Working with local manufacturers, the partners identified a curriculum that the manufacturers would like to see implemented in our area. With the belief that some of this curriculum already existed, the partnership developed a survey which was sent out to private and public companies and institutions involved in the training and placement of our local machining workforce. The results of the survey are provided as a starting point for discussion on the further development of a curriculum that can meet the needs of regional employers, training providers and jobseekers.

If you have any questions or would like to become involved in this effort, please call Robert Martin, President, WNYTDC at (716) 636-3626.

The Results

A survey was mailed to 55 companies and organizations identified as possible providers of some Machine Training. The mailing resulted in 20 responses, with 12 indicating that they provide some level of training as listed on the survey.

Table 1 provides a summary of the survey results indicating if training is provided and at what skill level.

Table 2 shows the number of hours provided at each skill level and the total hours of machining training provided.

Table 3 is a detailed summary of hours provided by skill level.

A follow-up questionnaire was sent to each of the 12 respondents, to further define the training offered. The information provided from the questionnaire was compared to information obtained from the Pankow Vocational Technical Center. A summary of the questionnaire results are provided in Table 4.
